How many grams of protein are in a scoop of whey?
Anywhere from 20 g to 30 g, depending whose label it is. Across the 33 whey protein packages whose panel states an amount, a labeled serving holds 20 g, 21 g, 23 g, 24 g, 25 g, 26 g and 30 g, and no one amount accounts for even half of them. The category next door does cluster: 51 of the 61 creatine packages we price state the same 5 g, which is why a tub of creatine can be compared by its serving count and one of these cannot. So a price per serving compares nothing here, and this site prices every one of them per 25 g protein instead.
What that does to a shelf: both Sports Research Whey Protein Isolate, Unflavored (907 g) and Nutricost Whey Protein Isolate, Unflavored (2 lb) are sold as 26 servings. One label calls a serving 25 g of protein and the other 30 g, so the same number on the front of two tubs is two different purchases.
| Protein per serving | Packages | Cheapest per 25 g protein | Cheapest at this serving |

| 24 g | 5 | $1.33 | MuscleTech Nitro Tech 100% Whey Gold, Double Rich Chocolate (5 lb) buy |
| 25 g | 12 | $1.38 | Animal Whey (Iso Whey Protein Blend), Chocolate (4 lb) buy |

Every figure is the protein each product's own Supplement Facts panel states per serving, which is not the weight of the scoop: a scoop of concentrate is mostly protein but not entirely, and its panel says so. Where a panel prints the scoop weight too, that figure is on the product page, but it is never divided into the protein and never used here. 25 g protein is the yardstick this site prices whey against, not an amount anyone should take. The same question for plant protein is answered on its own page.
Where to buy: the whey protein shortlist
The pick is the cheapest certified product, at the exact package sold where the certifier names packages, with no adverse finding on record, a price its retailer let us read recently, and no more than a year’s supply at the label’s serving; per delivered dose where the retailer publishes a delivery rate. Where none does, it is the cheapest such product before delivery, and it says how far the order is from free delivery. It is the same pick the category page shows. Any answer shown beside it is the cheapest under a different rule and says so on its own line; answers that cost more than the pick fold under one line until you ask for them.
How these lines are chosen
Among 33 products and 33 retailer listings we track; Amazon and Walmart are not included. A month is thirty doses of the size in the heading, priced the same way as the per-dose figure beside it. “Delivery known” ranks only products whose retailer publishes a delivery rate; a cheaper product with an unpublished rate is on its own line, or in the full list below.
Full comparison of every product in this category: Whey Protein. Every question we answer: the question index.
What this rests on: prices we last recorded at the retailer named on each product page, which go stale, and each page says when it was checked; the products we track, not every product sold, and Amazon and Walmart are not among the stores; listings and labels read at the source, each linked from the page.
